[How to] Unlock A Password Protected iPad 2 With Magnet Or Smart Cover

In today’s world where such emphasis is laid upon security, be it a corporate firm or an individual, all are very much aware of what all things can happen if their private information somehow reaches in the hands of wrong people. Here we will see how the iPad2 users need to be careful of because of a security flaw that has emerged in iOS5.

The security flaw is  such that, anyone with a Smart Cover or magnet can break into your “password-protected” iPad 2′s locked passcode screen and access whatever app was previously left open. The person who unlocks your iPad 2 will not have complete access to your iPad, but will be able to gain access to whatever you locked your iPad 2 on. If your iPad 2 was previously in Mail, Safari, Messages, Contacts, or Maps, then you can imagine the sorts of personal information that can be viewed on your iPad and what other consequences you will face. If you left your iPad 2 on its home screen, the person can view which applications you have on your device, control media from the multitasking bar, but not much else.

From a locked iPad 2:

  • Hold down the power button until the the slider appears across the top
  • Close the iPad 2′s Smart Cover or swing a magnet over the magnetic points around the screen rim, then remove the Smart cover or magnet
  • Click “Cancel” at the bottom of the lock screen

The passcode bypass was discovered by 9to5mac, who recorded a video demonstrating the security flaw:

Sprint say they will Unlock the iPhone 4S for ‘Good Customers’ by Request

There’s been a lot of confusion going around about the Unlocking policy of the iPhone 4S carriers, for Verizon the doubts already have been cleared with their 60 days policy for unlock, that is they will unlock the Micro-SIM slot of iPhone 4S if the customer is in good standing for 60 days. There were some confusions about Sprint though, earlier Macworld reported about how both the carriers will tackle the Unlocking, but later on some other media reports said that Macworld’s reports were inaccurate.

But now Sprint has officially issued a new statement regarding the iPhone 4S unlocking policy. It says, that sprint will initially ship the Micro-SIM slots unlocked iPhone 4S but later on they will push an update to lock those slots. Then they will only allow the unlock by request for the customers with good standing for the phone to be used internationally with other carriers.

Here’s what the official statement  of Sprint Spokesperson  Mermelstein verbatim read:

Sprint’s policy is to have the iPhone 4S SIM locked to our network domestically and internationally. At launch, the International SIM will be unlocked. We do expect a SIM lock to be pushed to the devices shortly after launch. We will then allow existing customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use if needed in the future.

Customers can sign up for one of our international rate plans and use this phone all over the world. When traveling internationally, there is a setting that must be turned on within the device to connect to GSM. The phone will work with a SIM that is provided within the device out of the box. International voice and data charges are on a pay-as-you-go basis and vary based on the country where the customer is using their phone; a list of rates is available at www.sprint.com/international.

Sprint offers two international voice plans that customers can subscribe to for discounted voice rates:

The Canada Roaming add-on is $2.99 per month and all calls placed from Canada are only 20 cents per minute. Without this add-on, calls from Canada are 59 cents per minute.

The Sprint Worldwide Voice add-on is $4.99 per month and offers discounted rates in countries around the world. For example, calls from Italy are $1.69 per minute with this add-on or $1.99 per minute without the add-on; calls from Peru are $2.29 per minute with the add-on or $2.49 per minute without it.

Jailbreak iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad 4.3.1 using Redsnow – Untethered [Guide]

The iPhone Dev Team has just released the tools to a Untethered Jailbreak for the latest iOS v4.3.1.

The device support list is as follows:

  • iPhone3GS
  • iPhone4 (GSM)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad1
  • AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)

The iPad 2 is not supported cause it uses a newer bootrom version that still needs to be patched.

Both pwnagetool and redsnow can be used to perform this jailbreak. I’d suggest you go with Redsnow as its more easier to use and simpler.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.6rc9 :

Redsnow for Windows : Click Here

Redsnow for Mac : Click Here

PwnageTool_4.3.dmg : PwnageTool_4.3.dmg.6293151.TPB.torrent

The reason I highly recommend Redsnow is cause you don’t need to wipe any data i.e. you can simply click the Update button to get to 4.3.1 and retain all your Songs, Music, Apps and everything without the need for a complete re-sync as in PwnageTool.

Update to 4.3.1 using the Update button via iTunes. (iPhone 4 AtnT Locked users should NOT try this. Read the note at the end of the page for more info.)

Follow these Steps to Jailbreak your iDevice running 4.3.1 using RedSnow:

1.Open Redsnow

2. Click on Browse and select the IPSW firmware file for 4.3.1.

For Mac the Location is : Your Name > Library > iTunes > iPad Software Updates

For Windows the location is : C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

3. Once the IPSW is successfully identified, click on Next. Now you will get the following screen to prepare you to boot into DFU Mode inorder to load the exploit.

4. Click Next and you will get the steps to enter DFU Mode. If you’re still finding it difficult to enter DFU mode, follow this nice video tutorial which explains the procedure nicely.

5. Once you correctly enter DFU, you will see the following screen :

6. Your device will go start the Jailbreak Process. Wait for it to be finished and you will have an Untethered Device with 4.3.1.

Note for Factory Locked iPhone 4 Users:

For those using an iPhone unlocked with ultrasn0w do not update to 4.3.1 using the official method. If you already have, then tough luck. The iPhone 4 baseband is very difficult to hack and would take a while to get patched.

For others with iPhone 4 on older firmware and unlocked with ultrasn0w, please stay where you are until ultrasn0w is updated for 4.3.1. Once ultrasn0w is updated to support 4.3.1 you will have to use pwnagetool to create a custom IPSW and then update. Updated ultrasnow is said to be released today on Cydia.
Another sureshot way to make sure your carrier locked devices stay unlocked even after an upgrade of iOS versions you can purchase SIM Unlock tools. Some of these tools even provide iPhone 5 SIM unlocking!
