As promised, Apple has released the iPhone 2.1 Firmware Update today. This updates comes with many new bug fixes and enhancements. Some of which include Improved Calls, Application Stability and also Enhanced Security among others !

Interestingly this time Apple has provided a sorf of Official Changelog ! Check it out :

There are no detailed Changelogs as of yet. But Steve Jobs says that this is a big update and “it fixes a lot of bugs.“ These “bugs” were to be fixed with battery life improvements, a fix for app crashes, faster back ups and fewer dropped calls.

Although this was said referring to the iPhone 2.1 Update, changes such as imporved battery life, improved Application Stability and less crashes should apply for the iPod Touch as well.

Winpwn 2.5 was recently launched. Its still said to be in BETA stage which according to the Dev Team means “Use at your Own Risk” !

This latest iteration of Winpwn is fully Graphical with a very attractive User Interface !

Note : iPhone 3G still cannot be Software Unlocked ! If you want to Unlock iPhone 3G you will need to use a Hardware Tool like a RebelSIM.

Things you Need :

• Winpwn 2.5
• iPhone 2.0.2 Firmware
• iPhone 3.9 Bootloader
• iPhone 4.6 Bootloader

Follow these Steps to Unlock/Activate your 2G 2.0.2 iPhone :

1. Connect your iPhone to your PC, make sure iTunes Detects it.

2. Open Winpwn 2.5, make sure “Expert Mode” is On. You’ll see a side Tray showing the on-going processes when Expert Mode is activated.

3. Choose the appropriate Device – iPhone, iPod Touch or iPhone 3G.

4. Select your Firmware.

5. Choose to Delete Bootneuter.app after installation.

6. Click on Activate if you’re not on ATnT.

7. Select Cydia, installing Cydia is Compulsary. Installer 4 is as good as useless for now.

8. Wipe Data as NO.

9. Check to manually adjust Root Partition Size and set the Size to 800 Mb.

10. The IPSW Building will now start.

11. By Default the Custom IPSW is stored in My Documents.

12. After IPSW is Created. Put the iPhone in DFU Mode, open iTunes, Click on Shift+Restore.

13. Select the CustomFirmware file from My Documents.

14. After everything is done, you will be on 2.0.2 Jailbroken and Unlocked !

The iPhone 3G reportedly was facing many Network Issues, mainly the bad 3G reception and frequent call drops as mentioned in the previous posts. Rumors were all around the net about Apple promising to issue a Software Fix for this. Well it seems they’ve indeed issued a fix, but as usual they’ve provided no Detailed Change Log and only mentioned Bug Fixes in the Changes list.

The 2.0.2 Firmware was launched for both the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch.

Unofficial ChangeLog is as Follows :

• No new settings appear to have been included.
• Some users report faster browsing, though this may be due to cleared cache.
• Typing lag may be reduced.
• Apps don’t require updates; NetShare still works.
• Transition from music list to Coverflow has changed.

Note that there are also reports of Few Applications not Working after the Firmware Update. The list of Apps reported to have problems are :

Just 2 days back I mentioned about the Network Issues that were faced by many Users. The Network problem was mainly related to the 3G Reception of the iPhone.

According to a report by Sweden’s engineering magazine Ny Teknik, the problem is not cause of any Hardware Defect, but just a miscalibrated setting in the Software that controls the iPhone 3G’s antenna and an amplifier that captures faint signals from the antenna.

Hear what a few other Sources have to say :

iSuppli analyst Francis Sideco fingered any of a number of parts, “from the phone’s antenna and amplifier and the radio frequency transceiver to the baseband that processes the digital signal and sends it to the speaker or screen.”

BusinessWeek’s Peter Burrows, said “The reception issues are tied to the iPhone’s Infineon chip and will be addressed via an upcoming software update rather than a Product Recall”

So for all those facing 3G Problems on their iPhones, cross your fingers and wait for an update, if it still doesn’t help, then go ahead and sue Apple/ATnT for this

Apple released a new update to its iPhone/iPhone 3G/iPod Touch lineup this Monday (i.e. 4th August) The Firmware version 2.0.1 is update to the previously released 2.0 Firmware.

The new Firmware fixes some Bugs and improves on Security.

The Changelog is as Follows :

• You can now drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
• Contacts are now more responsive.
• After installing 2.0.1, each successive backup is much faster.
• Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone’s reception “bars” while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
• Keypad loads quicker.
• Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
