New Mac OS X Trojan Steals Processing Power, Causes Slowdowns

A newly found Mac OS X Trojan bundles a component that steals processing power of video cards to generate Bitcoins, a popular type of virtual currency. A single virtual Bitcoin can be sold for as much as 4$ in the real world!

The new Trojan was dubbed DevilRobber by antivirus vendors and is being distributed together with several software applications via BitTorrent sites.

According to Mac antivirus vendor Intego “This malware is complex, and performs many operations.” Also said that “It is a combination of several types of malware: It is a Trojan horse, since it is hidden inside other applications; it is a backdoor, as it opens ports and can accept commands from command and control servers; it is a stealer, as it steals data and Bitcoin virtual money; and it is a spyware, as it sends personal data to remote servers.”

The Bitcoin mining program installed on infected computers is called DiabloMiner, is a legitimate Java-based application used for virtual currency’s production.

Bitcoin is a form of virtual cash that can be exchanged by users without the need for an intermediary bank or payment service.

The DevilRobber trojan steals processing power, which can lead to slow computer performance, as well as actual Bitcoins, which are kept in virtual wallets on the victim’s machine.

[How to] Improve Battery Life Of Your iPhone 4S

A couple of days back we broke the news to you about a certain battery problem for an iPhone 4S user. The problem appears to be affecting some iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users as well, indicating a likely software bug rather than a hardware defect.People at iDownloadBlog seemed to have worked out a solution that may not work for everybody, even though some folks are reporting seeing an improved battery performance.

It appears that the ‘Setting Time Zone’ function in iOS 5 can lead to excess power drain because the device is repeatedly polling the user’s location in order to set the time zone based on their current location (which is useful when traveling).

1. To disable this functionality, launch the Settings app.

[How to] Clear and Free Up Inactive Memory/RAM in Mac OS X

I absolutely love Mac OS X! And there’s just this 1 thing I really hate about OS X which is the way it manages memory.

Mac OS X has this concept called Inactive Memory wherein the OS stores all frequently used applications on RAM for faster access and less Disk I/O’s. I’ve read numerious articles explaining how this is actually a good feature but I’m not sold on that.

This “Inactive Memory” is supposed to get freed up when you are low on “Free Memory”; however that almost never seems to happen for me and a lot of users out there. The Inactive Memory never seems to get free even when “Free Memory” is around 10Mb and other apps are in dire need of memory!

Take this example, I’ve 8 Gb RAM on my Core i5 iMac. And I use Parallels quite often to run Windows 7 side by side. I’m almost always left with just about 20-30Mb of Free RAM. After that I open up a couple of high resource apps like iPhoto or Photoshop and the Free Memory never increases, causing the apps to take as long as a minute each to load!

Solution:

There’s an easy solution to this. Simply follow the 2 Steps below:

Mac OS X 10.8 Testing Is Already Underway

Its early days, still news  is that, Apple has already begun work on their next version of Mac OS X named 10.8. Apple had only just released the final version of OS X 10.7 (Lion) to customers in July. OS X Lion had following features:

  • An iOS-like application launch screen known as Launchpad, Full-screen apps
  •  A new combined interface for Dashboard, Expose, and Spaces known as Mission Control
  • Enhanced Multi-Touch gestures, and improvements to a number of core applications such as Mail.

OS X Lion was the first version of Mac OS X to be distributed through the Mac App Store and it included a number of new features for the Mac.While Apple has yet to announce plans for the next major version of OS X, evidence of 10.8 first began appearing in web logs of MacRumors in August, and have since accelerated. This graph shows an increasing number of web visits from Mac OS X 10.8 users over the past several months.

Also a thing to observe is that, the first appearance of 10.7 was nearly a year before the first developer preview, and nearly 20 months before the public release.

So far, its been a mystery as to what we will get from Mac OS X 10.8. Traditionally, Apple has released its OS X’s every alternate year like, Mac OS X 10.3 in 2003, 10.4 in 2005, 10.5 in 2007, 10.6 in 2009, and 10.7 in 2011. Going by this we can expect a 2013 public release for Mac OS X 10.8.

FastTweet+ Cydia App Enables Fast Tweeting on iPhone

So far we are using Twitter app on iPhone, for that we need to tap on Twitter app then activate tweet-input box, face unnecessary information and finally send. Now a new Twitter based app makes your process even simpler.

New app called FastTweet+ which is developed by Devin Snipes allows you to send tweets. The special thing about this app is this app makes the process simpler than previous one. There is no timeline nor support for DMs, the aim is to send out tweets quickly and efficiently. You have to just activate your app and send tweets.

From Cydia: “Requires iOS 5 or higher. This app WILL ONLY work on iOS 5 capable devices. FastTweet+ allows you to send tweets to Twitter. It’s that simple and it’s this free.”

It is tested and confirmed that on iPhone 4 it works as advertised. But this only supported by iOS 5 since it has built in Tweeter API.
