Today is the day of jailbreaking tools. With the news of release of C-Dev reporter by Chronic Dev Team which will send crash reports to Chronic Dev Team servers (instead of Apple’s) so they can find exploits, now that news has been followed up by the news of yet another jailbreaking tool. It’s called Ac1dSn0w and it jailbreaks iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 tethered on OS X Snow Leopard and Lion.

Although, Ac1dSn0w isn’t really different from established tools like Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze but it is a promising alternative with its features like remote jailbreaking, custom firmware creation and iRecovery Remote. Also, it is currently available for OS X only.

From PwnDevTeam:

I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just released Beta 1 of Ac1dSn0w for Mac OS X Lion (should alsowork on Snow Leopard). Ac1dSn0w allows you to jailbreak your iDevice tethered. It also provides features like Tethered Boot, Pwned DFU, and Exit Recovery to get your device out of Recovery Loop.It currently supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G and original iPad on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 for tethered jailbreak. Once you go through the steps, your device will be jailbroken tethered, just like redsn0w or sn0wbreeze. iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are NOT supported.

Step 1: Download Ac1dSn0w [Google Docs Link] and launch it.

For such purpose, there is a new utility in the market which is capable of recovering data from your iOS backups in iTunes, provided if the backup isn’t encrypted. In order to make this happen you need to be using Mac OS X Lion.

You can get your free copy of the application from the developers’ website. Once you download the app, copy it to the applications folder (/Applications) on your startup drive and launch it from there. You’ll be presented with a window and a button, Read Backups, which you should click. After clicking you’ll see something like this:

If you want both the versions of Mac OS (Lion as well as Snow Leopard) and don’t want to deal with dual booting, another option is to run Mac OS X Lion in a virtual machine atop an older 10.6 Snow Leopard installation. You will require VMWare and a Mac OS X installer app.

Installing OS X Lion in a Virtual Machine Over Snow Leopard

Proceed to install VMWare as usual, and make sure you have the OS X Lion installer .app somewhere that’s easy to access. Everything else is just as straight forward:

Launch VMWare and use the Virtual Machine assistant to create a new VM, configure it how you want

At the “Installation Media” section, drag and drop the OS X Lion Install.app into the window, so that “Use operating system disc or image” is checked and the ‘Install Mac OS X Lion.app’ is the media

Hence, in order to experience a consistent behaviour between MobileMe Mail and Mac OS X Mail, you need to make sure that your Mac OS X Mail preferences are configured in the following manner:

Open Mail on your Mac.

Choose Preferences from the Mail menu.

Click Junk Mail.

Make sure “Enable junk mail filtering” is selected.

Also, enable the option to “Move it to the Junk mailbox” located under “When junk mail arrives.”

Click the Accounts tab.

Select your MobileMe account.

Click the Mailbox Behaviors tab.

Make sure “Store junk messages on the server” is enabled.

You can also enter the same settings on other Macs from which you use Mac OS X Mail to access your MobileMe email. With these settings, all messages marked as junk will be placed into the same folder on the MobileMe server. Whenever you visit your Junk folder and remove messages, they’ll be removed permanently.

I absolutely love Mac OS X! And there’s just this 1 thing I really hate about OS X which is the way it manages memory.

Mac OS X has this concept called Inactive Memory wherein the OS stores all frequently used applications on RAM for faster access and less Disk I/O’s. I’ve read numerious articles explaining how this is actually a good feature but I’m not sold on that.

This “Inactive Memory” is supposed to get freed up when you are low on “Free Memory”; however that almost never seems to happen for me and a lot of users out there. The Inactive Memory never seems to get free even when “Free Memory” is around 10Mb and other apps are in dire need of memory!

Take this example, I’ve 8 Gb RAM on my Core i5 iMac. And I use Parallels quite often to run Windows 7 side by side. I’m almost always left with just about 20-30Mb of Free RAM. After that I open up a couple of high resource apps like iPhoto or Photoshop and the Free Memory never increases, causing the apps to take as long as a minute each to load!

Solution:

There’s an easy solution to this. Simply follow the 2 Steps below:

Swipe with your finger on each app to bring up the option to hide that purchase. Tap “Hide” and the desired app will be erased from your purchase history. The same option can be used in the “Purchased” section of the App Store on the iPad.

Do you feel the need to not disclose your browser history to your dear ones?Well now you can do so on your iPhone or iPad having Safari by enabling Private Browsing. This allows you to browse the web without saving a record of browser history, cache, logins, searches, and whatever else would normally be visible to everyone who use your iOS device.

To Enable Private Browsing you can perform following steps:

Tap on “Settings” and then navigate to and tap on “Safari”

Under ‘Privacy’ slide the switch next to “Private Browsing” so that it displays “ON”

You can further tweak the Safari privacy by adjusting cookie behavior in the same menu. If you change your mind then, you can disable private browsing by going back to the same menu and sliding ‘ON’ to “OFF”.

If you do any online gift shopping, or a variety of other things on the web that you don’t want your dear one’s to discover, this is a great feature to get used. Other than losing the convenience of saved logins and cookies, there is no harm with leaving private mode enabled all the time.

Traditionally, Apple has always denied its users with older version of a device, access to some new update or feature when a software update comes or some new feature is introduced. This has been Apple’s main strategy to lure its present customers to make the switch to new devices and attract some new customers by marketing on a single new feature as it happened in the case of iPhone 4S “Siri”, the new personal assistant. However, as it turned out there was no need to buy iPhone 4S as some developer had already ported Siri to his iPhone 4.

In addition to Siri, the Cupertino company added some Smooth Multitasking Gestures and AirPlay Mirroring in iOS 5 to the iPad 2. Those using Apple’s thinner, lighter, faster and younger tablet device now have the ability, using four or five fingers, to pinch the screen in-app and bring about the homescreen, making a pleasant change from overusing the home button. In addition, the gestures could be used to bring up the multitasking bar (swipe up) and jump between open apps (swipe left or right).

However, there is another way to get these features on iPad 1 without going through the tedious jailbreak.

Despite no jailbreak taking place, this hack is executed using a modified version of Redsnow. It will only tweak a few settings to unlock gestures and mirroring.
