[How to] Install OS X Lion from USB Pen Drive or DVD (Clean Install)

OS X Lion was released today via the Official Mac App Store. Apple has limited the ways to get Lion on your Mac to only the Mac App Store. There is no Official method as of now from Apple that lets you perform a Clean Install of Lion on your Mac.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t perform a clean install of Lion.
Requirements:
1. Mac OS X Snow Leopard with Mac App Store installed.
Link to purchase OS X Lion from App Store ($29.99)
2. A USB Drive with minimum 8Gb capacity.
Alternate Requirement: 4.7Gb DVD (Procedure of getting the Lion setup onto a Blank DVD is same as below, simply skip the 3rd Step)
Follow the steps below to Install OS X Lion from a USB Pen Drive:
1. Download Lion from the Mac App Store. You will get the setup in your Applications folder. Go to your Applications folder, Right Click on “Install Mac OS X Lion” and select Show Package Contents.
2. Go inside SharedSupport and open InstallESD.dmg
3. Here we have to prepare the USB Drive in order to get Lion Setup onto it and install it.
- Insert the USB Drive in your Mac.
- Open Disk Utility
- From the left menu. Select your Pen Drive and Click on the Erase Tab.
- Erase it with the following parameters shown below.

4. Once the format is complete, go to the Restore Tab. (or Right Click on “Lion USB Key” from left menu and Click Restore)
Drag Mac OS X Install ESD to the Source field.
Drag the USB Drive titled “Lion USB Key” as shown below to the Destination field.
5. The last step is to Click on Restore and your Lion Setup on a USB Drive is ready!
6. Restart your Mac holding down the Option key while the USB Drive is plugged in. Select the USB Drive and Perform a Clean Install of Lion!

Okay, I did this but there was no “Mac OS Install ESD” listed in the left pane beneath the InstallESD.dmg item.

@Matt: If you followed the steps correctly, you will see the Mac OS X Install ESD as a disk icon on your Desktop. Once you see that, you should be able to see that disk in Disk Utility as well.
Make sure you followed the 1st and 2nd Step correctly.

Thanks for the confirmation – I’d already managed to do it, but my question is: are you aware if it’s possible to do a clean install on a machine running Leopard?
The normal path is obviously upgrade to Snow Leopard then an upgrade to Lion. I’d prefer my wife’s MacBook Air to run Lion if possible.
If you don’t know, doesn’t matter, thanks for making it so clear.

@ Brian May: Yep. That is what this Tutorial is for. You can perform a Clean Install on a Mac machine running SL or even if that Mac machine isn’t running anything in general.

I just installed a brand new hard drive in my macbook. I created the Lion USB installer disk and can boot the computer from the USB drive. I went to disk utility and hard drive is there and I formatted OSX. But when I select Install OSX Lion it says that I do not have enough free space. It’s trying to install on the USB drive I guess and does not give me an option to select my hard drive. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!

I have exactly the same problem as kinglenario and the problem is that i am not a computer geek to figure this on my own. Could anyone give us some hints on how to solve this inconvenience?
